Entrance Examination Information

Admission Information For 2012 enrollment

International Graduate Course in Global Environmental Studies will be launched in September 2011. The language of instruction will be English. Application Information Overview 2012 (M.A. & Ph.D.)

a) Admittance decision based on:
  • M.A. in Global Environmental Studies: document screening.
  • Ph.D. in Global Environmental Studies: document screening in addition to interview.
b) Application schedule for Spring matriculation (April 2012) is as follows:
  • M.A. application period is October 3 to October 14, 2011.
  • Ph.D. application period is October 3 to October 14, 2011. Interviews held in a week after the publication of the applicants who have passed the document screening.
c) Application schedule for Autumn matriculation (September 2012) is as follows:
  • M.A. application period is May 7 to May 18, 2012.
  • Ph.D. application period is May 7 to May 18, 2012. Interviews held in a week after the publication of the applicants who have passed the document screening.

Application For M.A. Admission

1. ELIGIBILITY

MEXT requires that all applicants complete sixteen (16) years of formal education before entering graduate school in Japan. Students from countries with only fifteen (15) years of formal education should contact the Admissions Office for further information. Students must hold a B.A. degree or equivalent at the time of matriculation. Those holding an undergraduate degree other than a B.A. should inquire at the Admissions Office in advance.

2. APPLICATION FEE

  • Inside Japan 35,000 yen.
  • Outside Japan 37,500 yen.

3. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

  • Application Form with a photograph (4.5 x 3.5 cm)

Master’s degree

1st Year : ¥1,331,200*
2nd Year : ¥1,039,300*

  • * : Tuition fees are revised annually in accordance with changes in personnel expenses and operating subsidy from the government.

Application For Ph.D. Admission

1. ELIGIBILITY

For admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree, applicants must have a bachelor's and master’s degree based upon a distinguished record of academic achievement. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact potential dissertation supervisors before submitting their application. Information about the disciplinary specialties and research interests of faculty members are available at the Graduate Program in Global Environmental Studies website: http://www.genv.sophia.ac.jp/english/index.html

2. APPLICATION FEE

  • Inside Japan 35,000 yen.
  • Outside Japan 37,500 yen.

3. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

  • Application Form (1) and (2) with a photograph (4.5 x 3.5 cm)
  • Official university/college transcript(s)
  • Proof of graduation
  • An official score for the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or the IELTS (Academic). (For applicants whose native language is other than English)
  • Three letters of recommendation (use the provided forms)
  • Statement of purpose
  • Copy of the master’s thesis

Financial Assistance

Full Tuition Scholarship

Those wishing to apply for the scholarship should meet all following requirements.

1) Applicants must either be from an Asian country or Brazil
2) Applicants must apply from their country of residence not from Japan. Applicants must pass the entrance examination for our graduate studies of Sophia University before taking up residence in Japan.
3) Our graduate studies must be applicant's first choice.

New Students Scholarship

Scholarships for new students, which cover tuition fees one third, are awarded to enrolling master’s students and doctoral students each semester on the basis of a screening of documents submitted at the same time as the application for admission.Please note that a scholarship form is attached at the end of the application form.

Other Information

・Accommodation facilities

As with most urban universities in Japan, Sophia has limited dormitory space and the majority of students live off campus.

・Passport and Visa requirements to study in Japan, etc.

Visa Status
Students coming from abroad to study at Sophia University must have either a college student visa or another appropriate document such as diplomatic, official, or dependent visa. A temporary visitor visa is not acceptable. To qualify for a college student visa, a student is required to register for at least 10 hours of classes per week. For information regarding how to obtain a college student visa, please refer to the brochure on application procedures.
