MEXT requires that all applicants complete sixteen (16) years of formal education before entering graduate school in Japan. Students from countries with only fifteen (15) years of formal education should contact the Admissions Office for further information. Students must hold a B.A. degree or equivalent at the time of matriculation. Those holding an undergraduate degree other than a B.A. should inquire at the Admissions Office in advance.

For admission to candidacy for the Ph.D. degree, applicants must have a bachelor's and master’s degree based upon a distinguished record of academic achievement. Prospective candidates are encouraged to contact potential dissertation supervisors before submitting their application. *: Tuition fees are revised annually in accordance with changes in personnel expenses and operating subsidy from the government.
Full Tuition Scholarship
Those wishing to apply for the scholarship should meet all following requirements.
1) Applicants must either be from an Asian country or Brazil
2) Applicants must apply from their country of residence not from Japan. Applicants must pass the entrance examination for our graduate studies of Sophia University before taking up residence in Japan.
3) Our graduate studies must be applicant's first choice.
New Students Scholarship
Scholarships for new students, which cover tuition fees one third, are awarded to enrolling master’s students and doctoral students each semester on the basis of a screening of documents submitted at the same time as the application for admission.Please note that a scholarship form is attached at the end of the application form.
As with most urban universities in Japan, Sophia has limited dormitory space and the majority of students live off campus.
Visa Status
Students coming from abroad to study at Sophia University must have either a college student visa or another appropriate document such as diplomatic, official, or dependent visa. A temporary visitor visa is not acceptable. To qualify for a college student visa, a student is required to register for at least 10 hours of classes per week.
