Professor
IKEO SHIGERU

Born in 1943 in Tokyo. Graduated from Sophia University Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering in 1966. Left the doctoral course at Sophia University Graduate School of Science and Engineering without graduating in 1971. Doctor of Engineering (1974)  In 1972, started the research and teaching job at Sophia University as assistant, from 1991 as professor at Sophia University Faculty of Science and Technology.  Accepted an additional role at the Graduate School for Global Environmental Studies in 2007.

Introduction of Research

I conduct research on fluid engineering (a field of research relating to the flow of fluid such as water, oil, and air) within the field of mechanical engineering. Included in the field of fluid engineering are machines that convert natural energy into power, such as water and wind turbines. I also conduct research on fluid power transmission and control, especially environmental friendly aqua drive system. After I started the job at the Graduate School for Global Environmental Studies, the research on the multi-stage solar desalination still is added.

What can Students Learn?

Through the use of energy, human beings have constructed sophisticated civilizations. In my subject “Energy and the Environment,” I teach the principles of the energy converting  technologies in order to deepen the understanding of global environmental problems associated with the use of large quantities of energy and measures to solve the problems.

Introduction of Seminar

We are consuming large quantities of energy daily without knowing about it. My seminar centers on issues that are of immediate concern to every person, looking at global environmental problems from the perspective of energy and questioning how energy can be used more effectively.
